This year, Noah's Landing is collecting used cell phones and their accessories to raise much-needed funds for new habitat construction at the nature center.
Why cell phones? When cell phones are tossed into landfills, they can leak potentially harmful chemicals like antimony, arsenic, copper, cadmium, lead, and zinc. But even more distressing, cell phones contain coltan, a mineral that is extracted in the forests of the African Congo, home to some of the world's most critically endangered species, the lowland gorillas. Because of worldwide demand for cell phones (and therefore, coltan), the mining business in the Congo has exploded and helped to destroy gorilla habitats and further endanger their lives in the meat trade.
You can bring unwanted phones to Noah's Landing and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit our programs. You'll also know that you're keeping one more phone out of the landfills and leading to its reuse instead of its destruction.
Collection boxes are conveniently located at nature center's entrance gates and at the veterinary offices of Rolesville Veterinary Hospital in Rolesville, NC. We have set a collection goal of at least 100 used cell phones by October 2009.
To help us in this endeavor, we've partnered with ECO-CELL, a company which pays organizations for collecting used cell phones, batteries, and accessories. Through ECO-CELL’s innovative program, 70% of the phones collected will be used by first-time, low income users abroad or by selected local organizations, such as Battered Women’s Programs for emergency use (911 calls). ECO-CELL runs a strict NO LANDFILL Program! All items received by ECO-CELL, including batteries, accessories, and cell phones with no resale value, will be recycled using the best demonstrated technologies for recycling e-waste.
